Book Review: Turner's Apprentice: A Watercolor Masterclass
This book is about the watercolour techniques of J.M.W. Turner. It's not an instructional book in the sense that there are only a handful of step-by-step tutorials, and those are just to highlight certain techniques, not to recreate complete paintings.
This book is authored by artist and author Tony Smibert who is the "virtual apprentice", hence the book's title. So all the text and how Turner's art is interpreted is through him.
Highlight of this book is the text that analyse J.M.W. Turner thought process and workflow. There is a lot of insight. Unlike other watercolour instructional books that teach by asking you to copy, this book wants to help you understand the creative process so that you can replicate the look and style of Turner. Having said that, you do need to have an intermediate level with painting with watercolour in order to make best use of this book.
In this book, maybe you can find out why his works are considered unfinished in the past but admired by many today.
This is a great book on watercolour. There's a lot to think about.
