Book Review: How to Draw Manga: Sketching Manga-Style: Volume 3 Unforgettable Characters
Volume 3 is more of a figure drawing book than on character design. Figure drawing is taught in volume 1 and 2 but is given more focus here. It teaches posing and drawing the body from different angles, studying the neck, shoulders, arms and legs through full figure drawings.
There are a couple of step-by-step guided tutorials, including a coloured tutorial on creating the cover. The artists whose work are featured are Hikaru Hayashi, Takehiko Matsumoto and Kazuaki Morita. As usual, the examples are accompanied by loads of drawing tips. Unfortunately, most of the characters look rather similar because of their face shape, with only the most visual facial difference being the hairstyle. The section on clothing and composing the characters within manga panels are thin.
It's a good book that expands on what the previous two books covered on figure drawing. The goal here is to help create more lively poses.
