Book Review: The Art of Missing Link
This is a gorgeous companion artbook for Missing Link, the 2019 stop motion animated film directed by Chris Butler and produced by Laika.
It's a large 176-hardcover artbook filled with beautiful concept artworks, character designs, storyboards, environment and set designs. The artworks are really beautiful and contribute to the rich visual aesthetics of the film. For costume designs, you can see the research materials, fabric, type of clothing, colour choices that were used. The designs in this film is refreshingly different in look and style compared to the many 3D animated films out there. That is main selling point of this artbook.
Some of my favourite artworks are the huge story scene illustrations. I love the texture and the world being portrayed. The artists really managed to nail the look and feel. Texture and detail are the two keywords for the art in this book. There are also several photos of the physical sets, character sculpts and animated puppets and expressions.
All the beautiful images in this book are accompanied by insightful text on the production process that helps you understand the work that goes behind making such a film.
This is a terrific artbook. Highly recommended.
