Book Review: Meanwhile Back in Los Ranchos: An Illustrated Chronicle of Travel, Art, and Finding Home
Meanwhile Back in Los Ranchos is a fairly entertaining travelogue sketchbook from Trisha Ray. a lady from Los Ranchos, New Mexico, United States.
This book is a collection of her traveling adventures from 1970s to 80s. The later dates are vague because the stories are not really dated although they seem to be in chronological order. Her stories flow quite well despite of that.
Trisha Ray has been traveling even before she was 20 years old. She stayed at farm houses, chased sheep, worked for an airline, flew planes, collected grapes, baked, taught English and did a whole lot of odd jobs. To say that she's adventurous is an understatement. She has been to many countries, those in Europe, Southeast Asia, Nepal, India, Turkey, Persia and more.
All the while, she's being recording her adventures and stories with in her journals. The book has two parts, the first are her stories accompanied by coloured saturated watercolour sketches, and the second part has mainly old photographs.
The book's a very interesting account of her traveling life, filled with interesting bits of information, and interaction with all sorts of people. It seems like something is always going on, going wrong. There are stories of plane passengers sleeping on hotel lobby floors because the hotel was full and the plane was faulty, escaping zoo animals and other unexpected turn of events. Mixed in her travel stories are occasional flashbacks to her life in Los Ranchos, hence the title.
There quite a lot to read and take it for a travelogue sketchbook that has 214 pages.
Highly recommended to those who loves travel stories or sketchbooks.
