Book Review: Sketches of Soho: Scenes from the Back Streets of Old Hong Kong

Sketches of Soho is one of the few sketchbooks Lorette E. Roberts authored on Asian countries and cities. The others are Colors and Characters of China, Sights and Secrets of Hong Kong, Sketches of Sai Kung, Sketches of Stanley, Sketches of Singapore and Sketches of the Southside.

This is a 72-page hardcover book. The pages are thick like cards. They aren't very flexible and I accidentally bent a few pages near to the spine while flipping.

The book was first published in 2005 and have since been reprinted several times.

Soho in Hong is around Staunton Street and Elgin Street. The name is derived from South of Hollywood Road.

Collected within the pages are the scenes around the area. Through the beautiful watercolour, pen and ink sketches, it gives us a look the lives of people there, alleys and shops. There are vegetable stalls, temples, busy people commuting, objects sold in shops and of course a lot of Chinese characters. Beside the sketches are short notes on the subjects.

Nice sketchbook.
