Review: UPerfect UColor T118 Display (18-inch 4K)

Review unit provided by UPERFECT

Big thanks again to UPerfect for sending over another portable display for review. In case you don't know, UPerfect is a company that sells portable displays, and I have reviewed many in the past.

The UPerfect UColor T118 is a 18-inch 4K UHD portable LCD targeted at gamers. Price of the display at the time of review is USD 409 before applying any coupon codes (listed below).

Bottom line

The design is clean, simple and... generic. I measured colour support for 100% sRGB, 80% AdobeRGB and maximum brightness of 152 nits.

Colours look good and the visuals are really sharp thanks to the 4K UHD resolution. The company mentions response time of 3-5 ms for gaming and there's FreeSync. Display supports HDMI and USB-C.

Portability is a selling point if portability matters to you. 18-inch is big, but not too big and the display is thin, and compact enough which is easy to bring around.

Downsides? Refresh rate is limited to 60Hz, and it's can't be powered to maximum brightness with one single USB-C cable.

At this price range, you should also check out the UPerfect UMax 22 which is a 22-inch portable LCD with 1440P resolution selling at USD 309 for the non-touchscreen version. It is much bigger so it's less portable, but it's noticeably cheaper. 1440P is not an issue if you're not gonna be playing games at 4K UHD.

Design

Design of the display is clean, simple and generic. Bezels are thin at the top and bottom, thicker at the sides. Weight of the display is just 1.53kg so this is still quite portable.

The folding kickstand is useful. It's made with metal unlike the rest of the body which is plastic. VESA mount is 7.5 x 7.5cm.

UPerfect does sell a tabletop VESA stand for USD 69. But I prefer to just put the monitor on my tablet stand (above) which can be used with other tablets too.

The ports located on the left are two USB-C video ports and mini HDMI.

On the right there's a 3.5mm audio jack, buttons for OSD menu and a micro-USB port.

Speakers are located behind the display and face down. If the display is deployed with the kickstand on the tablet, the audio will be concentrated in the back. If you elevated the display on a stand, at least the audio will bounce off the table. Volume is loud but audio sounds hollow, not surprisedly.

It's possible to power then display with a single USB-C video cable, but you won't be able to get maximum brightness.

So regardless whether you use HDMI or USB-C for video connection, you'll have to attach another USB-C cable to power

OSD options are

  • Brightness
  • Contrast
  • Black Equalizer
  • Game Mode: Standard, FPS, RTS
  • Saturation
  • Hue
  • Sharpness
  • DispRotate
  • Ultra HDR Mode
  • Eye Protection
  • 3D Sound
  • FreeSync
  • Input Source
  • Language
  • Aspect Ratio

  • Colour Temperature

  • V Position

The anti-glare of the matte surface is quite aggressive so diffused reflections can create this white "haze" that makes the display look glaring.

When I first power on the display, the colours looked off so I had to use my colour calibrator to calibrate the display. If you do not have a colour calibrator, you'll have to use the RGB settings to manual calibrate the colours.

I measured colour support for 100% sRGB, 80% AdobeRGB, 78% NTSC, 90% P3 and a maximum brightness of 152 nits out of the advertised 300 nits. Colours look good after calibration and the brightness is sufficient for indoor use. I typically use my displays at 150 - 200 nits so 152 is sufficient for me.

If you want better colour accuracy, you can go with the 17.3-inch 4K UPerfect UColor J5 (USD 389) which supports 100% AdobeRGB and has higher brightness. And that display looks very similar to the one that I had review before.

The display can certainly be used for gaming. The main feature that's missing is 120Hz refresh rate which would make animation look smoother, and make it more obvious that this is a gaming monitor.

Conclusion

The UPerfect UColor T118 performs as well as the specifications would suggest. If these are not the specifications you're looking for, you can always check out other portable displays from UPerfect because they have a huge variety.

For a display that's marketing at gaming, not having 120Hz refresh rate is a miss. So that's the main downside or limitation I can think of.
