Book Review: The World of Tim Burton (exhibition companion artbook)
The World of Tim Burton is an artbook companion to the exhibition that was held at the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, in Turin, Italy, from October 10, 2023 to April 7, 2024.
This is a 240-page hardcover artbook published by Silvana Editoriale. The book's quite thick. Binding looks good. Paper's non-glossy matte and colours are well reproduced.
Bulk of the art in this book are personal sketches that Tim Burton never thought would ever be exhibited, and of course there are some sketches he has created for the movies he has directed. The artworks are from 1970s to 2020s.
Tim Burton's style of art is a blend of childlike, dark, whimsical and weird. They look like the doodles of a teenager who has watched too much TV and has too much imagination. Whether you like his style of art is entirely personal preference. Through the sketches made before he started making movies, you can clearly see someone who is quite special and different from most people.
A few guest writers were invited to write about Tim Burton and his influence. Do not expect a biography although I actually wish there was one.
By the way, there was a large format 434-page hardcover called The Art of Tim Burton that was published in 2009. That book features close to 1,000 artworks. I do not have that book so unfortunately I can't tell you how much work is duplicated here.
