Review: Gravity (2013)
Nowadays, I only watch films that are rated 90% and above on Rotten Tomatoes. I made the decision because of a series of films that I watched that were quite disappointing despite favourable reviews. So at over 90% percent, even if it's bad, it's should be at least a decent movie.
Gravity (2013) scored 97% on RT. It's 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.
It's a good film. They nailed all the technical aspect. Acting is superb by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock. Visuals are stunning. Cinematography is amazing. When the space debris hit, you can hold your breathe until the camera turns away. It's a great action movie.
However, movie goers who looking for a more emotional impact would be left wanting more. I felt the storytelling didn't have as much impact as Apollo 13, or even Aliens, especially at the ending. Perhaps because it's quite a short film at only 1.5 hours. Or perhaps because it uses the convenient cliche way to give flaws to characters - when you can't show it you talk about it. There wasn't much done to develop the characters.
The film's alright in Imax. It's suited for Imax because it lets you feel as if you're floating in space with the characters. But at the same time, you won't feel nauseous. For me the purpose of Imax is to put the viewer there, if not it's just a bigger screen.
4 out of 5 stars
PS: If you prefer more character driven stories, check out the Japanese anime Planetes. I even prefer the soundtrack here than Gravity's.
PSPS: Director Alfonso Cuarón's the one who directed Children of Men and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
