Book Review: Mechs, Robots and Other Cool Stuff by Patrick Ballesteros
Here's the sketchbook of Patrick Ballesteros, a freelance illustrator and concept artist from Los Angeles, California.
Ballesteros is a reader of Parka Blogs (thanks!) and has sent me his new sketchbooks to show you all. By the way, if you're an artist and want to promote your sketchbooks on the blog, just drop me a note. Promotion is free. I'm always glad to help out fellow artists.
Mechs, Robots and Other Cool Stuff is a 8.5-inch squarish 60-page paperback sketchbook. Collected within are the personal sketches depicting not just mechas but also lots of other characters. Probably half the book's on mechanical stuff, and the rest a mixture of other drawings which could be of animals or caricature style character portraits. I like the sketchy and spontaneous style.
It's interesting he uses red ink for sketching instead of black. There's the occasional use of markers for light shading. But the form of his characters are easily discernible just from the lines alone.
Although the book says the first printing was in July 2013, I spotted quite a few pieces of work from 2014.
