Book Review: Winslow Homer Watercolors
This is the artbook featuring the beautiful watercolour paintings by Winslow Homer, an American landscape painter known for his marine artworks. Although his primary medium was oil, he turned to watercolour later in his career and painted lots of wonderful paintings of which a selected are shown in this book.
Winslow Homer Watercolors is presented as a large wide format 120-page hardcover. The paintings are reproduced in large sizes. Subject matter are the shores of New England, seacoast of Cullercoats, Caribbean, Cuba, Florida, the Adirondacks and Canada. I love the way he captures the vast landscapes, and figures in his paintings would go about doing what they are doing, be it hunting, fishing or just resting. He uses a nice desaturated colour scheme.
Also included are the text looking at Homer's life and artistic career. In this section, there are some beautiful and detailed pen and ink drawings as well.
While I was searching online, I found an earlier book called The Watercolors of Winslow Homer published by W.W. Norton & Company in 2001. I don't have that book so I can't comment on any duplication of works.
This is a beautiful collection of Winslow Homer watercolours.
