Book Review: Daytoner: Enslaving Humanity in Style by Daniel Hahn

Daytoner: Enslaving Humanity in Style is a sci-fi concept art book by Daniel Hahn (Instagram) and published by Design Studio Press.

The book's a large format 212-page hardcover filled with concepts for humanoids and robots from the future. The paper used is thick, low gloss and reproduces the artworks wonderfully.

The logo on the cover is actually the design for letters DTNR, aka Daytoner, the alias the Daniel Hahn uses to create concept art for the gaming and move industries. From what I've found online, Hahn is/was the Creative Director for Automotive Design at BMW Group Designworks USA so he actually designs cars for a living, but you won't see any car designs in this book.

The concept for this book is set in a world that's populated by robots and humanoids. Each design featured in this book also comes with a short backstory on why that robot/humanoid exists. The designs are grouped according to Urban, Utility, Religion, Entertainment, Military and Sci-Fi.

The artworks reminds me of District 9 (2009), Evangelion, Derek Stenning's art and Nuthin by Mech artbooks also published by Design Studio Press.

The concept art are incredibly detailed and look amazing. Some look like they are 3D rendered but I can't be sure. What this book lacked is a section talking about how these artworks were created. Oh, there are some sketches as well.

If you like sci-fi art and mecha designs, this is the book to get.
