Book Review: The Art of Cuphead

The Art of Cuphead - 01

Cuphead is a wonderful example of what happens when artists let their imagination run wild, and then turn that into a game.

In case you don't know, Cuphead is a run and gun platform video game released in 2017. The game was inspired by the rubber hose style of animation popular from the 1930s during the golden age of American animation. Just think of the old school animation of Mickey Mouse and friends.

This 264-page book published by Dark Horse is available in hardcover and Kindle format.

Featured in this book are the hundreds, or is it thousands, of designs for the characters that appeared in the game. The designs and ideas are pretty wild. I mean there are characters like Cuphead and Mugman so everything is possible. And these character shoot "bullets" from their fingers. lol.

The book is packed with lots of art. There's also much to read about the characters, designs and stories.

This is a fantastic book for fans of the game and those who like old school 2D animation American art.

Comments

This book looks amazing but I have to ask: does anyone know if there is a book about old school 2D animation American art? I'd like something more transversal about characters from various production companies: bettie boop, popeye, hanna & barbera, etc... like an encyclopedia or "history of old american school animation"? Thanks!
