Book Review: カプコンデザインワークス (Capcom Design Works)
Capcom Design Works or カプコンデザインワークス is a Japanese art book that collects the concept art created for various Capcom games.
Titles include Street Fighter, Rockman, Darkstalkers, Bio-Hazard and many other more like spin-offs Puzzle Fighter, or the vertical scrolling fighter jet arcade game 1941.
Because of the numerous titles included, there's no major emphasis on any one game. The variety is amazing and there are plenty of characters to look at. All are fully coloured splash pages and character portraits. A small amount of artwork has been reproduced in later books like Udon's Art of Capcom and Street Fighter Art Works.
Besides the illustrations, there are also staff interviews, comic strip of a day at work, two art tutorials and photos of the art studio. There's even a top view of the studio modeled in 3D showing where the artists sit. Unfortunately, there are no translated editions for this Japanese book, so all the text are in Japanese.
Some of the artists include あきまん (Akiman), 西村キヌ (Kinu Nishimura), CRMK, イケノ (Daigo Ikeno), 大ちゃん (Daichan), えだやん (Edayan), 森気楼 (Shinkiro).
This book is essentially a portfolio for the artists and Capcom, recommended for character designers, game artists, fans of Udon and Capcom gamers.
