Book Review: 戦国BASARA2 オフィシャルコンプリートワークス (BASARA 2 Official Complete Works)
Sengoku Basara (戦国BASARA) is a series of action video games developed and published by Capcom stretching across several consoles based in feudal Japan. It was released in the US as Devil Kings.
I'm very surprised by the style of the art. It's unlike any of the concept art books I've seen before. Half of the book is filled with character designs created with these brightly coloured ink washes. At times, the strokes are really wild like they are drawn really quickly. Certainly not a style that will appeal to everyone.
The other half of the book is on 3D versions of the characters as shown in the game, complete with the weapons and accessories they hold. Here you can see clearer the details of the costume designs, and the feudal Japan influence. They look really well modeled and coloured (or texture mapped).
Also included are the storyboards for the cut scenes and the promotional graphics for the game and merchandise. 2 and 3 pages respectively. Not much.
For those who can read Japanese, there are short interviews and fact files on the voice actors, and longer interviews with the staff who worked on the game.
This book should probably appeal more to the fans of the game.
