Book Review: Zao Dao's Cuisine Chinoise: Five Tales of Food and Life
Publisher Dark Horse did a great job with translating 早稻 (Zao Dao), a female Chinese illustrator and comic book artist born in southern Guangdong, China, in 1990.
Zao Dao's style mixes traditional Chinese painting style together with modern storytelling techniques. It's a style that's easily recognisable. And her art looks great. I've featured her earlier artbooks and they leave a lasting impression in me.
This 96-page hardcover is a collection of folklore type stories, some with talking animals. The stories are short and simple. The art has so much texture and life. Line art was drawn with brush to create the very textural look that's very different from comics drawn with hard lines with sharp edges. The comic panelling works was done very nicely too with a strong sense of design.
There's a lot I like about this book. The art, the stories, the style. The only downside is there should be more pages because looking at the art makes you wish for more.
